There are fifty four countries currently in the continent of Africa. The list of countries includes Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The number of countries has often increased and altered as most of the territorial divisions in Africa were made by the colonial powers. Eritrea for example is a relatively new country. Africa is the poorest continent despite its abundant natural wealth and a major reason for this has been its colonial past.

One does need to take into account the fact that some countries, are not independent nations, and while they have geopolitical borders are are protectorates or territories (for example the Islands of St. Helena, the Canary Islands etc.).

Also certain parts of Africa has a tendency towards political instability (more so than other continents); this means that from time to time countries split, merge and are renamed.

 Africa is the world's second largest continent after Asia, it also holds the honor of being the second most populous continent after Asia. With an area about 30.2 million km, counting the adjacent islands, Africa covers about 6% of the earth's total surface and about 20.4% of the land area. It also constitutes around 14.72% of the world's total population which is pretty big. Man since long has been obsessed with Africa and the various theories related to it. Almost everyone on this planet knows about Africa, even small kids know because educational channels like Discovery and National Geographic broadcast a larger chuck of their documentaries from Africa. Check any program about animals and tribal people on Discovery or Nat Geo, the content would be coming from Africa or any of its surrounding islands. In spite of being so famous, Africa is still the poorest continent in the world. I am going to visit Egypt once more this year. I like it so much, I like all that connected with Egypt. Culture, pyramids, hotels, service and entertainment.

Its been a while since I have taken Geography. I know I would do poorly namely because the majority of the African nations were former colonies of the European empires that have declared there independence and gone there seperate ways.

Egypt is the one most familiar for me especially since they have the Pyramids for their tourist attraction while Kenya is also popular because I always see them at the news.
