Australia's islands
« on: June 16, 2011, 05:03:41 AM »
Australia is fringed by more than 8,000 islands, offering every type of holiday experience. Sail through the Whitsundays, 4WD to Fraser Island’s rainforests and lakes or pick a tropical paradise in the Great Barrier Reef. Uncover the unique culture of the Torres Strait or Tiwi Islands. Explore the wildlife havens of Kangaroo Island in South Australia or French and Phillip Island in Victoria. Day trip to gorgeous Rottnest Island from Perth or cruise the remote, spectacular Buccaneer Archipelago, off the coast of Derby. Island hop around Sydney Harbour or fly to Lord Howe Island, home to the world’s southernmost coral reef. Discover the wild beauty of the islands off Tasmania, itself Australia’s biggest island.

I knew about few of the Islands in Australia. I was very impressed with Fraser Island, which is fourth largest island (after Tasmania, Melville Island and Kangaroo Island), and the largest sand island in the world.

A popular story is behind the Island was named after a shipwreck survivor, who was cared for by Aborigines on the island, although another source says it's named after the survivor's husband, the captain of the ship.

If you're planning to holiday on the Sunshine or Gold Coasts of Queensland, Fraser Island is well situated for a day trip away. It is as well an ideal getaway spot for a longer stay. Imagine days of solitude and tranquil along its beaches and lakes and among its towering tropical forest trees in a romance with Nature in all her glory.

There are lot of Island's in Australia, I am describing one of them that is Norfolk Island. Norfolk is an island in the South Pacific, an Australian territory. It is 1600 km East of Sydney and Brisbane and 1000 km Northwest of Auckland. Norfolk Island was a penal colony of the British colony of New South Wales during 1788-1814 and 1825-1855 periods. In 1856 it was resolved in the second largest of the ancient inhabitants of Pitcairn Island. Norfolk immigration controls are separated from the Australian immigration control, and the island to impose additional restrictions on the visitors above those compulsory by Australia.
Australian citizens must have a passport or obtain an identity document of the authority of an Australian passport to travel to Norfolk Island. Citizens of other countries must have a passport. All visitors must have a return ticket and accommodation information to give to immigration staff.

The only most famous attraction in Australia that I know of is the Great Barrier Reef. Although it's not an island, it still makes a perfect one with all those views and marine wonders.

My friend worked in a hostel near Fraser Island so she got a free trip there. I've seen pictures and they look absolutely beautiful, I'll definitely go there one day but in general the islands sound amazing!
