In Papua New Guinea people live on a volcano. 1994 eruption of Tavurvur is an active volcano that lies near Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. It is a sub-vent of the Rabaul caldera and lies on the eastern rim of the larger feature. The volcano is most well known for its devastating eruptions over Rabaul.
Mt Tavurvur is the most well known volcano in Rabaul caldera, and has erupted as recently in January 2009. town was almost completely filled with ashes. Many people died, most of the buildings were destroyed. Although part of the city and was later restored, its population after the disaster has fallen by more than a third. Hardly anyone could have imagined in Rabaul, that their prosperous city will be razed to the ground. And yet it happened. On the serene town collapsed hundreds of thousands of tons of hot rocks and volcanic ash.
