10 things you dont expect to find in Berlin

You know the Brandenburg Gate, but did you know that?

1. Looks like Paris, but these elaborate buildings are from a periodcalled Gründerzeit (founders time of the German Empire) and can stillbe found in larger numbers in several districts like Charlottenburg.

2. A large Synagogue, called the Neue Synagoge. It was nearly destroyed in WWII and rebuilt in the 1980s.

3. Still inside Berlin, lots of forests ans lakes are part of the city area. This is the Müggelsse.

4. Even in 2008 there are some buildings in the city centre which aresprankled with bullet holes from WWII. This is next to the Museumisland.

5. The tower belongs to the French Cathedral at the Gendarmenmarkt inthe center of the city. Along with the Pariser Platz is shows thelasting Connection to France.

6. The Stalinallee (now Karl-Marx-Alle) is a really monumentalboulevard in Eastberlin. It was built in the 1950s to demonstrate thesuperiority of communism over capitalism. The buildings were supposedto be palaces for the working class.

7. The Frankfurter Tor is a monumental gate-a-like-towers at the former Stalinallee.

9. Looks like old Berlin, but the Nikolaiviertel was destroyed in WWIIand reconstructed in the 1980s in Eastberlin. If you take a closer lookyou see the concrete slabs it is made off.

10. A fortress from the late medieval times called the Zitadelle Spandau, I wonder what it protected?
