Sicily
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:06:47 AM »
Sicily is the largest Mediterranean island and is a cultural hotpot with influences from Spain, North Africa, Greece and Italy. It has lots to offer the tourist.

There are Roman ruins that are on equal to those found in Italy. Excellent choice of fine food and wines.

Palermo and surrounding districts have been historically a mafia stronghold. However, its grip has weakened through continued pressure from locals and the Sicilian government.

Sicily, although changing with the times, has retained its awe inspiring beauty particularly in areas in and around Trapani,   Catania    and Messina.

Sicily has been considered a crucial strategic location due in large part to its importance for Mediterranean trade routes.
